With the earth's resources being depleted at a fast rate, it is the most sensible choice to examine the earlier lifestyle and adopt a fresh, green one that would protect the planet for future centuries. Many people have begun to adopt a 'green lifestyle', as it is the only way in which we can stop abusing the planet. Even so, many of the resources have been irrevocably depleted. So it is only natural that we adopt green methods to stop or minimize this abuse. Here are some ideas that would help you go green when you upgrade your living room. Slowly, from there, you can move on to other parts of the house and fulfill your environmental responsibility.
The windows in your living room
You can change the angle of the windows in your room and adjust it in such a way that it would bring in more light and air into your room. The main benefit of this is that you don't have to switch on the air conditioner as much as you used to. You can install glass panels that can open like trapdoors, so you don't have to switch on the fan as you can easily get enough air through the window.
Stop cutting down of trees
If you are building a house on a vacant plot, then ensure you retain the shady trees. It would keep the house cool and provide some obstruction and privacy as well.
Windows on the wall
If you want some breeze on the deck or on the patio, you might like to cut windows in the walls to bring the natural wind in. When you have guests for the afternoon or evening, this is where you can sit and have a chat, instead of in the living room.
Go vintage
You can visit flea market and get some really beautiful antique furniture. They are made of authentic, solid wood and not at all like the furniture that you get to buy now. These are treasures that would last and stay strong for years on end.
Finally, when you start making these green changes in your room, you must take measures to improve its air quality as well. While building or upgrading your living room with natural materials would drastically improve its air quality, you still have to stop using materials that causes internal pollution. For example, furniture using MDF could lead to nasal cancer or leukemia, or VOC paint, which contains dreadful chemicals like formaldehyde, acetone and benzene could lead to skin irritation. Try using natural, durable materials as much as possible.
